Tutoring Overview
ÐßÐßÊÓƵ offers large and small group peer tutoring services for selected courses. Available tutoring is designed to help enhance test-taking skills, modify study habits, and/or focus on critical material and content. Peer tutoring services serve as an additional academic support and do not take the place of class attendance, face-to-face meetings with faculty/course directors, or meetings with peer study groups. Tutoring is an active learning process and students are expected to come prepared to all tutoring sessions. Tutoring sessions are not meant to be reiterations of the lectures but are interactive sessions on material with which the tutee is struggling.
Request a Tutor
A student can initiate a request for tutoring services through their online student portal under the Student Services tab. Students will click on the tutoring link and follow the prompts to request a tutor. Once the request is submitted, an email will be automatically sent to the faculty/course director or academic dean for approval. Students will be notified via email of the decision. If approved, the student will be able to select a tutor from the drop-down menu. Students who request tutoring services must regularly attend classes and meet with faculty prior to being approved for tutoring.

Tutoring Eligibility
Open (group) tutoring is often available for many courses for any student, regardless of academic standing. Tutoring sessions with a Senior Education Specialist for students at significant risk of failing a course are identified by the Academic Associate Dean, CHA Program Director or CGS Program Director. Senior Education Specialists are available to provide tutoring in basic science courses to at-risk students identified by their college/program.
Small Group/Assigned Tutoring - Students who are in academic jeopardy in a course will be given priority in the tutoring program. Academic difficulty is defined by the College, however, students typically need to be failing or near failing in order to be approved for tutoring. In CHS and CGS only, students who fail to achieve the required grade point average may also request tutoring assistance. Students may not be eligible or may lose eligibility to receive a tutor if their test scores improve, or if the student fails to meet the requirement of attending lecture, laboratory, and workshop sessions.
Become a Tutor
A student can initiate an application to become a tutor through their online student portal under the MWU Tutoring Program from their Student Services tab. Students select the tutoring link and follow the prompts to Offer to be a Tutor. Once the application is submitted, an email will be automatically sent to the Academic Associate Dean or Program Director for preliminary approval. Students will be notified via email of the decision. If preliminarily approved, an email will be sent to the student with on-boarding instructions from Human Resources. A student only has final approval to tutor once Human Resources has approved the student as having completed the HR on-boarding. Students preliminarily approved to tutor by their college Academic Associate Dean or program’s Program Director and have received final approval from Human Resources, must complete a virtual 30-minute Tutor Training before they can begin tutoring.
